Great comments Adrian. When Adam Smith spoke of free markets, he meant free from the Rentier. In a previous missive I bought up Dean Baker's point that critics of the economy went down a rabbit hole on markets via the influence of Polanyi (e.g. markets were always creatures of the state).

And today tech monopolists still rely on the myth of the market (which for them means letting the new Rentier of intellectual property (much of which is public patrimony) grab all the rents.
