Great essay Jack. Yes economics, as currently practiced, is pure rubbish, but they don't invite anthropologists like Polanyi and Graeber to Jackson Hole or Davos. Adam Smith always intended for his 2 part treatise to be read together, first The Moral Sentiments, then The Wealth of Nations. But today economics is not about truth and well reasoned philosophy, it is ALL ABOUT POWER, and the Neofeudalist cult of economics has it. Since the 197Os they have mostly given their fake Nobel Prizes (actually the Swedish National Bank Prize) to those who do the best job of pandering to predators (or to co-opt inconvenient truths). Beyond economics indeed, but how and where? I wasted an entire career on it, and while Complexity Economics is finally gotten a tiny foothold after 40 years, it is still a minor dent in the monstrous profession.
