This was actually Veblen's point about the predatory impulse, that community forced us to curb. Years ago when conservatives were just conservatives and not Nazis, a political scientist suggested that liberals were the nurturing mother and republicans were the stern father. These patterns are repeated in lots of higher order species, so if the point is nature demands that we all need to be bullies and/or fend for ourselves, then I'd have to object a bit. Plus, our system of socialism for the rich and free enterprise for the poor does not support the BS of rugged individualism.
